The beginning of Reiki
Mikao Usui discovered the healing energy of Reiki over 80 years ago, on his search for enlightenment. After meditating on a mountain for 21 days, he became aware that he was in a state of peace and harmony with his existence and observed the amazing sensation of energy flowing through him. He gave it the name of Reiki, a combination of two Japanese words meaning "spiritual life force energy".
Reiki is pure light and love.
After he descended from the mountain, Usui found that by placing his hands on people, he could give the Reiki to others and help heal them. He continued to give Reiki as a way of healing one's own mind, body and spirit, and to help us on our path to enlightenment.
Mikao Usui founded "The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai" as a closed order that is much devoted to spiritual practise as a path to enlightenment. Giving Reiki, meditating and the practise of a monastic way of life was the beginning of Traditional Japanese Reiki. After years of training many Reiki masters, Usui understood that this was not going to help as many people as he wanted to reach, so he encouraged one of his senior students, Chujiro Hayashi, a master himself, to leave the Gakkai and open a clinic in Japan to take Reiki to the people.
Hayashi attuned many masters and one of these was a lady from Hawaii, Hawayo Takata, who took this wonderful energy out into the world. There are now many different lineages of Reiki in the West, and most of these are more focused on hands-on healing as the main goal. With Gendai Reikiho, the focus is on spiritual development, as Usui first intended, and the ability to heal is strengthened as we grow.
Gendai Reikiho
The lineage I am attuned to is Gendai Reikiho. Hiroshi Doi, its founder, studied for many years at Usui's Gakkai, and now unites Traditional Japanese Reiki with our modern lifestyle to bring us Gendai Reikiho. He has developed Usui's monastic rituals into a method more accessible for us to practise, but without changing the essence.
Gendai makes Reiki practise easier for us in the West so we can use this wonderful healing energy to ease our way along our own path to enlightenment and to heal others.
In the spirit of Usui Sensei, Gendai Reikiho embraces purification of the mind, body and spirit so we can live in the state of perfect harmony, peace and wellness - in alignment with ultimate Truth.
Reiki is universal energy of the highest form.
